Intent
At Woodingdean Primary School, we want our children to gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
Implementation
Inspire – Our children will be able to listen, sing, play perform and evaluate music. They will be exposed to different genres of music and learn about the cultures that have produced them. Composer past and present will provide a rich experience of musical change and development.
Explore – Our children will learn the key skills of music such as developing technical control in playing an instrument and/or singing, to be able to perform musically with authenticity. They will explore composition skills through notation inspired by sign, moving towards correct musical notation. They will do this through improvising around themes and exploring sound – how it is made and how they can change dynamics, tempo an effect.
Engage – Our children will be involved in making, presenting and evaluating music; both their own and those of others, including classical and popular music. They will understand how cultural identity can be linked to music and will explore cultural influence of music through elements of dance, exploring how beat and rhythm inspire movement.
Deepen – Over their time with us, our children will move from being able create simple rhythms and melodies to being able to compose their own music using correct notation. The realisation that music is an important part of culture and mood will be embedded,
Impact
Our children will have passion and the courage to explore further. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children will be able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. They will be able to dissect music and comprehend its parts. They will have an understanding of how to further develop skills and will have developed an opinion on musical styles and likes that will inspire their future aspirations.
